The Basics of a Sailing Race
A sailing race, sometimes referred to as a sailing regatta, is a competition in which sailors compete to reach a particular destination in the least amount of time. The sailboat who arrives at the finish line first, wins. Often races are held by sailing associations and organizations, many of them regional. There are also national and international sailboat races. If you're brand new to the world of sailing racing learn as much as you can on the subject before contemplating race entry.

The RRS, or Racing Rules of Sailing, apply to all yacht races, sailboat races, catamaran races and even model boat races. These rules should be understood in detail before any competition is entered. Also the various flags and what they symbolize should be memorized as well. Flags and sounds are used to announce changes in the race. For example, a certain flag with a certain number of sound signals and whether or not the flag is raised or lowered means something specific, such as the race is delayed or is getting ready to begin.
There are different types of races often seen in sailing news. For example, harbor racing takes place within a period of hours and is conducted on protected waters. The America's Cup is a popular example of a harbor style race. The course is usually triangular and marked by various buoys. Another type of racing is called inshore, which is done from one body of land to another or within sight of land. These races range in duration from a few hours to days. Then there are offshore races, which are open water long distance races. Watching as many races as you can is recommended because you'll learn more than you ever could by just reading about them.
Before entering your first sailing race you will need to join a yacht club. These clubs are regional for yacht owners, and often hold small races for both junior members and adults. As with all sports, working your way to the top is a part of racing. You may start off in small races but move up to higher profile races with bigger and better prizes and rewards. Whether you enjoy sailing as a hobby or are devoted to it as a way of life, racing can make things more fun and exciting.
